Gulkula’s Success

Since its establishment in late 2017, Gulkula has provided employment and training opportunities for many local indigenous men and women in the north-east Arnhem Land region

To date, Gulkula’s on-the-job training program delivers a 50% indigenous workforce for our bauxite mining operations. This level of indigenous participation in an Australian operating mine is an outstanding achievement however it is only halfway to our goal to be not only a fully indigenous owned but also fully indigenous operated business.

Gulkula’s on-the-job training has also provided the foundation for numerous other young indigenous men and women’s career with many of our former participants developing solid self-management skills enabling them to gain employment in other businesses across north-east Arnhem land.

Success has many definitions. Gulkula defines success as the positive impact it has on the Yolngu who have been, and still are, a part of the Gulkula story.

Gulkula is for Yolngu who want to make a difference – a difference in themselves, a difference to their family, and a difference in their community – through living by Gulkula’s values of honesty, reliability, and respect.

The Yolngu that Gulkula generally employ are young men and women who are not work-ready, and who often have limited language, literacy, numeracy (LLN) or work experience. Gulkula employees are supported by Yolngu mentors, LLN teachers, and a supportive caring environment that nurtures their personal and professional development.

Gulkula’s primary aim is to enable its Yolngu employees to develop their skills and grow confidence in themselves. As these skills and confidence grow, so does Gulkula’s business opportunities. Gulkula is committed to progress only at the pace at which it can develop Indigenous employees to support its operations.
