We Are Gulkula

Gulkula’s purpose is to empower Yolngu people through managing the resources of our land to advance economic and social development opportunities for all.

Yolngu are the Indigenous people of north-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. For over 50,000 years, we have forged a connection to our land. From trading with our northern neighbours in Asia hundreds of years before European settlement to being one of the leading Indigenous groups promoting Aboriginal land rights recognition, we are innovative but still committed to our traditional culture. Gulkula allows us to remain steadfast in traditional values while enabling us to navigate modern ideas, thus creating a business that has Indigenous empowerment and development in its soul.

Gulkula is the outcome of Yolngu deciding how the natural resources of our land are managed. Having a strong bond to the land means that we sustainably manage the natural resources as more of an obligation to our ancestors and future generations rather than simply as a business requirement.

Gulkula’s vision is to be a source of inspiration and guidance to other traditional landowner groups aspiring to develop their own land and capabilities.
